While chemistry as a lesson in the school curriculum is reserved for older students, Kaunas VII Fort laboratory opens its doors to everyone who is curious to learn more about the world around us. There will be no frighteningly complicated formulas to scare you away, as we try to explain even the most complex chemical reactions using practical examples and by way of experiments. Surrounded by vials, retorts and other laboratory equipment, participants of learning sessions, together with a friendly team of fellow scientists will be immersed into the fascinating world of chemistry where each discovery will bring the joy of learning.

Upon the arrival to the VII Fort laboratory, you, as an educational activity participant, will be fully equipped as a real scientist and will learn basic laboratory work rules. Under the guidance of two session coaches, young scientists will be able to observe and to carry out various experiments.

Introduction to the World of Chemistry

This “Introduction to the world of chemistry” session has been designed for youngest researchers that are eager to discover exciting facets of chemistry. During the session, depending on the age of the participants, their wishes or yet on the relevant school curriculum, we will present the phenomena of luminescence, properties of various chemical solutions, materials and corresponding chemical reactions. Our young scientists will be able to learn how to prepare a multi-layered cocktail, what kind of materials are needed to create fireworks in a liquid, and the mystery behind the medieval science of alchemy. The “Introduction to the world of chemistry” is a collection of the most impressive chemical experiments, adapted to the needs of the younger children.

Experiments with Food

Participants of this educational activity will be invited to a real-life molecular kitchen where various sciences meet and thus, plenty of physical and chemical processes can be observed. These processes render dishes more savoury all the while maintaining necessary and healthy properties of the ingredients.

This exciting activity combines technical know-how with culinary art. Participants will learn about main nutrients, their virtues for the human body and the unique recipes that one can concoct using them.

We will also discuss food supplements such as agar, sodium alginate and other chemical substances that are used for food preparation and decoration. We will also use them to create caviar tasting of soda drinks and fruit noodles. We will make “espuma” foam; then by using low-temperature method – we will prepare ice-cream, we will also put magic ice-cubes into our multi-layered cocktails. With all food experiments finished, we will chill together and share our tasty handmade treats.

Magic of Light

Fluorescent materials – one of the last additions to the VII Fort laboratory learning sessions’ list – deals with a particularly exciting domain of chemistry. Young scientists will hear about main types of luminescence, will understand why the fireflies glow and what is inside a glowing stick. We will explore together the basic properties of luminescent materials, how these materials are used in forensic science – in particular to discover blood traces or to identify counterfeit money-, or prove useful for plumbers. Children will consolidate their newly acquired knowledge by carrying out various laboratory experiments. In small groups, our younger colleagues will prepare magnificent glowing solutions, bursting with rich colours.

Attention! When you reserve this learning session, please consider the time of the day – the experiments are most impressive when performed outdoors at dusk.

What if we do this or that?... Colour explorers

When we observe a rainbow in the sky, we smile – colours make us happier. Participants of this particular educational activity will perform plenty of eye-popping experiments and as a result will become full-fledged indicator experts.  Our young scientists will learn how to distinguish between acid and alkaline solutions and what colour ranges are typical for both. Using natural and chemical indicators during the session, we will mix the solutions, will discover acid and alkaline materials, will create an amazing indicator rainbow and, at the end, will explore the mystery of the invisible ink. Session participants will prepare themselves their own magic blue vial that they will later take away to impress his friends.

ECO Laboratory: Let’s Consume Responsibly

These days people seem to think that the more they have and the more they consume, the happier they should be. In fact, it is quite the opposite: continuous consumption destroys natural resources and pollutes the environment, which, in turn, affects our health. We invite our young scientists to the ECO laboratory and to see for themselves how we can take the environment into account and how we can all consume responsibly.

This learning session is dedicated to principles and signs of responsible development and consumption – the steps to take towards environmentally-friendly living, importance of sorting and recycling, and other common sense advice.  The participants will learn how to generate energy from conventional waste, how to create eco-friendly packaging and bio-plastic by using materials that are easy to come across in the everyday life; we will compare the bio-degradation properties of various plastic materials and will create our own lab balloon recycling machine.

Eureka!

Most of the time curious youngsters come to us to observe and take part in experiments with materials that are quite difficult to obtain elsewhere. However, this particular learning session is designed to show just how many amazing experiments can be carried out with easy-to-come-across materials. We will produce kinetic sand, prepare layered cocktails and explore other surprising materials’ reactions. We will finally cancel the “do not try that at home” rule and will even encourage our young scientists, under parents’ supervision, to repeat at home the experiments they have seen during this learning session. For this, every session participant will receive a detailed list of experiments. Observation and repeating independently will help children to acquire practical skills and will possibly enrich their pastime with some unseen before games and activities.

Lords of Fire

This learning session will make our young scientists feel like real lords of fire. They will get to know fire close and personal by learning a good deal about the chemical reaction of burning and differences – in terms of specifics and duration – of burning of various materials. Our young chemists will learn why the flame has different colours and how to make such multi-colour flame. This learning session will have you step outside the laboratory walls – we will teach you how to build a fire without using matches and will finish off by a magic experiment where its participants can safely hold the fire in their hands.

Chemical brine

This learning session will teach you everything about salt: what this notion means in chemistry, how salts are classified and what they are used for. We will find out how salts react with acids and alkaline solutions. By using various types of salts, participants will create their own chemical garden and will produce crystallized ornaments. Then, you will never say that salt is the thing that one finds in the kitchen!

History of Chemistry

This educational activity is designed to help younger scientists discover the origins of chemistry. Using our imagination and creative force, we will travel through ages and will come back to modern times. Although the session is rich in theoretical knowledge, its participants will also have to contribute to various dynamic activities – together we will try to light the first fire and will propose the solution to the remaining alchemical mystery – gold making. We will explore in a playful way the periodic table of elements, altogether and one by one. Participants will hear about the deeds of Aristotle, Mendeleyev, Lavoisier, Curie and others that contributed significantly to the development of chemistry as a science.

Edukacinės programos metu mokiniai susipažins su ypač svarbia medžiagų klase – metalais. Programos dalyviai sužinos, kas yra rūdos ir aptars populiariausius metalus: jų išskirtinumą, panaudojimą bei išsiaiškins, kur galime juos rasti. Programos metu mokiniai atliks įvairiausius su metalais susijusius eksperimentus, bendromis jėgomis pagamindami net sidabrinį veidrodį! Mokiniai taip pat sužinos, kokios yra pagrindinės bendrosios metalų savybės, išmoks atskirti vienus metalus (ir jų junginius) nuo kitų, susipažins su lydiniais. Programos pabaigoje dalyviai stebės, kaip skirtingus metalus veikia vanduo ir susipažins su korozijos reiškiniu.

Polymers

Do you know what a polymer is? What about monomer or polyurethane? You will – after this learning session on polymers and the like, what are they and how they are made. We will create a bouncy ball that will help us observe their properties. We will learn about polymer types, will produce bio-polymers and artificial ones – viscose, as well as synthetic polymers. We will tell you how and where these materials are used and, to end the polymer programme, will recycle some of typical household polymers.

Edukacinės programos metu mokiniai praktiškai susipažins su šiuolaikiniu analitinės chemijos metodu – spektrofotometrija, pamatydami, kaip kompiuterio prižiūrimi optikos dėsniai draugauja su chemijos reakcijomis ir sužinodami, ką gali pasakyti tam tikra tirpalo spalva.

Programos dalyviai taip pat sužinos, kaip šviesos spektras padeda apskaičiuoti medžiagų tankumą, susipažins su Bero-Lamberto dėsniu, o pasiremdami asmeninių tyrimų rezultatais bei kalibraciniu grafiku, išsiaiškins tirto vandens tinkamumą vartojimui.

Scents and smells

During this learning session children will be drawn into the wonderful world of scents and smells, a very important aspect of life since the ancient times. Young researchers will learn about distillation, and how essential oils and herbal distillates are made. Following the theoretical knowledge and practical consolidation learning parts, the children will explore another exciting technology – the making of scented soaps. They will find out which components are necessary for soap making, what gives it this particular smell and how to proceed… If you want to make your favourite-smelling soap at home!

Attention! This learning activity requires a certain amount of preparation in advance; therefore please give us at least a week’s notice when booking a date.

(Lietuvių) Jis yra visur aplinkui.  Jo negalime pamatyti, tačiau be jo neišgyventume. Jis turi svorį, kuris mus visą laiką slegia, nors to ir nejuntame. Kas tai?

Edukacinės programos „Oro burbalas“ metu mokiniai sužinos kokių dujų mišinys vadinamas oru. Mokysimės išmatuoti dujų tūrį bei aiškinsimės kas nutinka orą šildant ar šaldant. Atlikdami eksperimentus, aiškinsimės, kaip iškvėpiamame ore aptikti anglies dioksido dujas. Kursime anglies dioksido mini gesintuvus ir naudosime juos nedidelės liepsnos užgesinimui. Mokiniai programos metu taip pat sužinos apie suskystinto azoto ir kietosios būsenos anglies dvideginio panaudojimą pramonėje bei atliks tai iliustruojančius eksperimentus.
